Update – Robatayaki Ichiban, Hong Kong

We were at one time so worried that our favorite Robatayaki place in Causeway Bay, Ichiban closed down. Check out our previous review. Just after Chinese New Year, we passed by and noticed that the street level shop had closed down without any notice of a new location.

Fortunately, we passed by a week later and saw their removal notice. It turned out that they were on the verge of closing for good due to the high rents. Lucky for us, they found their current location on Hennessy Road, also in Causeway Bay (right next to Sogo department store).

Inheriting the decorations from the Japanese restaurant that previously occupied the premises, the decor is very different from the rustic feel of the old shop, which had been there for more than 20 years. Nevertheless, the same people provide the same friendly service and great food. As they just reopened for one week, there are still some minor teething problems with the new kitchen. But we are sure that they will sort it out very soon and we will definitely be back to support them. Please help spread the word of their new location ;-)

Review – Oyster & Wine Bar, Hong Kong

We haven’t been to the Hong Kong Sheraton Hotel for eons. Tonight, R had a meeting in Tsim Sha Tsui and thought we’d try the Oyster & Wine Bar on the top floor of the hotel. The lifts only go up to the 17th floor and a flight of stairs took us up to our destination. The views of the Hong Kong harbor were stunning especially when seen from the Kowloon side. We arrived early and had to wait for C, so we checked out the wine list. We were surprised to be given an iPad to select our wine. The app was not bad, we could select by type, grape, country, etc. and each wine had some tasting notes to help our selection. The best thing is you can add the wine to ‘my selections’ to narrow your selection or show the sommelier for a final recommendation. After playing with it for a while, we settled for the Champagne Barons de Rothschild. We heard about this a while back and always wanted to try it. This Brut non-vintage was smooth and well structured with a lingering finish worthy of vintage Champagnes.

When C arrived, we chose the king sized Seafood Platter HK$1,140/US$146. This was more substantial with two layers as opposed to the queen size that only had one layer and priced at HK$650/US$83. There was everything – oysters (of course), clams, mussels, prawns, crab, shrimp, etc. They were very fresh and we even encored a dozen Kumamoto oysters to satisfy our crave.

We were treated to dessert due to some incident with one of the waiter’s service, or the lack of. Not what you would expect from such a high caliber hotel. But the Molten Chocolate Cake and Grand Marnier Soufflé more than made up for it.

The food and atmosphere were great, but let’s hope the service is more up to par next time. Maybe we’ll sit at the oyster bar and sample their wide selection of more than 20 different oysters from all parts of the world.

Review – La Crêperie, Hong Kong

After our delicious dinner at Chez Patrick Deli, we walked a few blocks to La Crêperie for dessert. R immediately went for the Crêpe Suzette, which was flambéed in front of us. The crêpe was very good, thin and a little crispy on the edges. However, it was a bit dry and maybe more sauce would have been better. C had the Banana Crêpe with Caramel Sauce…a bit too sweet.

Nonetheless, this was long overdue as good crêpes are hard to find in Hong Kong. Thanks to Yann, the owner, for bringing La Crêperie to Hong Kong after Shanghai to satisfy our crave.

Review – Chez Patrick Deli, Hong Kong

This is a new deli by Chef Patrick Goubier of the Chez Patrick Restaurant fame. The deli, located on Star Street in Wanchai, Hong Kong, reminds us of the Classified‘s style of openness, wooden tables with numerous wines and jars lined along the walls. The intimate dining area seats around 30 but you won’t feel cramped. There’s even an outdoor area at the back for alfresco dining. With Classified sprouting up everywhere around town is there still room for another deli? Well there is. The food here was actually pretty good. For starters the bread came with a duck and pork spread that woke up our taste buds.

The menu is simple, two courses for HK$300/US$38 and HK$380/US$49 for three. For appetizers, you can pick from a wide selection from their deli counter. Or, as we did, order from the main course list for an appetizer sized portion. What struck our nerves was that they had Burgundy Snails and Steak Tartar. Both our favorites and we chose the escargots to start. C chose the Goose Foie Gras Terrine from the daily specials on the blackboard, which was amazing. The escargots didn’t come in their traditional shells so we didn’t have to fumble with them and could dive straight into the yummy garlic butter and pesto sauce. Pass the bread please, lots of bread… The difference between the appetizer and main course portions was that the latter came in a larger bowl with mashed potatoes. More bread please… To complement our dinner we had the 2006 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Red, a well balanced and very reasonably priced wine.

We passed for dessert…this time. The selection of cheeses was very tempting, especially the Munster and Tête de Moine. The reason was that we went over to La Crêperie for crêpes. We’ll definitely be back for the cheese.

Review – Classified Wanchai, Hong Kong

Taking a day off regular Sunday golf, we headed out to Wanchai, Hong Kong for a nice lunch at Classified.

C read about the baked Camembert with truffles, which was another reason to come back here. A sister restaurant to Classified on Hollywood Road, this is a smaller place and perfect for a Sunday lunch. With just a few tables and bar stools, you would have to share a table with others, but it is this intimate environment that makes it special.

We shared an Egg Royale and the Baked Camembert. The Former was OK, the egg wasn’t as runny as we like and the hollandaise sauce was a bit too sour for C. Nevertheless, the 15 minute wait for the Baked Camembert was well worth it. Although it didn’t look too appealing when it arrived, digging in to the cheese oozed lots of melted cheese with truffles and garlic that was perfect with toast. As one of the owners is also the owner of wholesale wine company Altaya Wines, you won’t have problems choosing something nice to complement the food. We sipped on a nice Chardonnay.

A nice relaxing lunch. C is already hinting to come back soon…or maybe try their other outlets in Sheung Wan, Central or Sai Kung.
