Great Birdie on Tough 16th @ Kau Sai Chau, Hong Kong
This is never an easy hole. A 496 yard Par 5, the blind tee shot has to clear a ravine but at least there is a pole to aim at to know where to go…in theory. Our tee shot was perfect and actually just made it to the back the edge of the fairway on the sharp left dog-leg. A 5-wood shot near the green for an 80 yard pitch to the front pin. With strong wind against us, we took a 52° and just cleared the front greenside bunker landing on the fringe and trickled onto the green. A five foot uphill putt was easily knocked in for Birdie!
Charity Birdie @ Kau Sai Chau, Hong Kong
We were invited to the EFG Bank Young Golfers’ Foundation / HKGA Charity Golf Day 2010 to play at the South Course at Kau Sai Chau, Hong Kong. This charity event was to provide additional support for elite young golfers in Hong Kong and provide further incentive for the young golfers to perform well when they represent Hong Kong overseas.
We got to play with junior Leon D’Souza and got off to a good start. Started on the back nine and parred the first four holes! Then on our 17th hole, the Par 4 8th, we hit a good tee shot to about 90 yards to the pin. With strong right to left winds we took the 56 degree wedge and aimed for the center of the green. Pushed slightly, I headed straight for the flag and overshot it a bit. Just pin high off the right edge of the green, we opted to putt instead of chip. A firm and confident stroke hit smack in the center of the hole. This also contributed an additional HK$300 to the charity cause. We also managed to get the best gross score for the day. All for a good cause.
Birdie – Kau Sai Chau, Hong Kong
This was a nearest to pin hole on Kau Sai Chau’s East Course. We were playing at the Johnny Walker + Bar Pacific tournament. The severely downhill #15 (130 yard, Par 3) had a strong wind blowing in our faces. We were debating whether to play 120 or 130 yards. Afraid that we might go over with a 9-iron, we used a pitching wedge to hopefully get it on the green. I was dead on line and thought we would be really close to the hole. But we came up short…luckily missed the front bunker though. The 30-40 footer slightly downhill putt tracked towards the hole and at the last moment, I had just enough momentum to roll into the hole. No nearest to pin, but a birdie was just as rewarding.
