Birdie at the Centurion Golf Championship @ Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong
Did not play particularly well at this year’s Centurion Golf Championship at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, Hong Kong. But on the 5th hole (our 14th) we had a textbook birdie on this Par 5. A perfect drive, an iron to 140 yards and a 7-iron to land 6 feet past the back pin. A tricky downhill putt proved not to be a problem.
Back Nine Birdies to Save the Round @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
After our Hole-in-One, we were not expecting much for our round today. But we did not expect the front nine to be that bad…only one Par on the 9th hole! Anyway, the back nine fared much better. On Ruby #2 we took our trusty 4-hybrid to tackle the 178 yard Par 3. Slightly past the hole we had a nine footer with a big right to left break. Taking a bit more break, we tracked nicely right in the cup. Note to R: take more break as you always under-read the break!
We seem to be good on Par 3s nowadays. On the next one, Ruby 8, a 9-iron got me pin high left of the flag. Also a nine footer, this time we had a left to right break that played more than it seemed. Bang, right in the center of the hole. Everyone was ecstatic as we had this new rule that anyone with more than two Birdies in one round would have to buy lunch!
Not bad to get back to two over for the back nine…don’t ask about the front…
HOLE-IN-ONE on Jade 3, Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
What a day. After a steady front nine on the Ruby/Jade courses in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, we were hoping to end our Birdie drought soon. Lo and behold, on the 180 yard Par 3 Jade #3, our 4-hybrid (Titleist 910H 24°) knocked me slightly left of the flag and heading towards the center pin. “Be the club” R shouted and after landing about 10 feet below the hole, one hop and a skip later, I disappeared!!! A HOLE-IN-ONE!!! WOW, what an amazing feeling. Our regular golf buddies L and A were there to give high fives with great enthusiasm in anticipation of the feast to follow. Anyway, that ended the drought with a bang.
A few holes later, on Jade #8, another Par 3, we hit the 4-hybrid again and was left with a 21 footer for Birdie. Taking a bit more of the right to left break (we’ve been under reading breaks all day) for the uphill putt got me home perfectly.
This must have been our day, as on the final hole, Jade #9, our drive left us with 160 yards to the back pin. A smooth 5-iron got me to the center of the green for a 16 foot uphill putt. Fortunately, our fellow competitor landed behind our exact line! Paying real close attention to the break, we found the same line for Birdie #2.
Not bad for a back nine one under par for a total of 75 (+4).
Mischievous Birdie @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
I was feeling mischievous today and wanted to have some fun. On the Par 3 Jade #3, our 5-iron was aimed a bit right to ride the wind, but unfortunately the wind didn’t help. I was 30 feet from the hole, pin high. But this green is notorious for the severe breaks, right to left for us. A downhill putt with a sharp break especially at the end near the hole. We took aim almost 15 feet right of the hole and hit a delicate putt which tracked perfectly along the line we chose. Smack in the center of the cup. Very sweet. Very fun!
Two Birdies in Six Holes @ Hong Kong Golf Club
Typhoon signal #3 was hoisted in Hong Kong but the skies looked calm enough to get us out to Hong Kong Golf Club’s Eden Course for a round of golf. Unfortunately, we only lasted six holes before being totally wiped out on the 7th tee.
Nevertheless, we managed two Birdies. On the Par 3 2nd, our playing partner read 149 yards to the pin with his range finder. A 7-iron shot me directly at the flag leaving a three foot uphill putt. Then on the Par 5 6th, it really started to rain cats and dogs. Quickly getting out from under our umbrella, we didn’t waste any time and hit a solid 5-wood that found the fairway. Our second shot used a 6-iron to lay up to the bottom of the hill leading up to the raised green. The rain died down a bit and I had 160 yards to the front pin position with some wind helping; we took a wide swing with a 5-iron. At first I was going for the left edge of the green, but once on the top of the hill, a favorable right bounce got me back on track to the flag…and I mean right on track. I was two inches from the hole!
Then it started pouring again with no end in sight. We even forgot to take a photo of the 6th hole. Having waited for more than 10 minutes on the 7th tee, we decided to call it quits. Well, it was good while it lasted.
