Miracle Back to Back Birdies @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
This was miraculous. On our back-9, the Jade course at Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, the two hardest holes (in our opinion) of all the 27 holes are Jade 1 (Par 5) and Jade 2 (Par 4). And we managed to Birdie both of them, back to back!
On Jade 1, our drive went miles and landed on the platform just short of the valley…somewhere we have never been before. Taking a 5-wood and hoping to land within 100 yards of the green, our shot went too far right. Lucky us, I just missed the cart path and landed in the rough 100 yards in. Our pitching wedge also went right, but a favorable kick knocked me back to the putting surface, pin high and leaving an 18 footer for our first Birdie.
Then on Jade 2, our drive left 180 yards to the green. Taking a 21° Hybrid, I landed left of the green, but again fortunately rode the slope and kicked right to land pin high with 15 feet to go. Not believing our luck, we took a deep breath and made our putt. Perfect line, perfect speed…I managed to just sneak in the right edge. Birdie number two! We were so ecstatic that we forgot to take a picture.
Getting par on these two holes is hard enough, getting a Birdie is lucky…getting Birdies on both holes is priceless…
Missed Eagle Chip for a Birdie @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
We were playing off the yellow tees today so there was an advantage. Nevertheless, our drive on the 4th hole on the Diamond Course at Discovery Bay (a 445 yard Par 5) was spot on and I managed to run down the slope leaving 170 yards to the hole. Slightly uphill and with the pin in the front left, we didn’t want to risk ending up in the greenside bunker. So we took the 4-hybrid but pulled it left a bit…still in play. Turned out to be just off the green almost pin high for a relatively easy Eagle chip. Unfortunately, we under-read the left to right break and missed, leaving a six inch tap in Birdie. A Birdie nonetheless.
Amazing Birdie @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
During the home game at Discovery Bay for the Intra-Club Championship with Clearwater Bay, on the Par 4 Diamond 9, we cut the Tiger line and ended up 86 yards to the pin but in the left rough on a severe down slope. Without our 56° wedge, we only had the 52° with us. This normally would be too much club, but adjusting for the slope, choking down and opening the clubface we executed the perfect shot. Went straight for the flag, and I ended up six inches from the hole. Very sweet…so sweet we forgot to take a picture :-p
Triple Birdies @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
Today’s back-9 was sensational. One over on the Jade Course at Discovery Bay, Hong Kong! Three Birdies. Two back to back. Amazing.
The first came on the Par 3 3rd. 179 yards downhill, our 5-iron got me 18 feet left of the hole. With the huge right to left swing, we didn’t expect it to go in. But wait…bang. Birdie number one. Then on the next hole, the Par 4 4th, our drive left us with 140 yards. With an 8-iron, we were just short of the hole by three feet. Birdie number two. Towards the end, on the Par 3 8th, our 4-hybrid managed to get us on the green, but 33 feet below the hole! 33 feet…uphill? No way… No way… OMG. Birdie number three! We were so excited we forgot to take a photo (again).
Back Nine Birdies to Save the Round @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
After our Hole-in-One, we were not expecting much for our round today. But we did not expect the front nine to be that bad…only one Par on the 9th hole! Anyway, the back nine fared much better. On Ruby #2 we took our trusty 4-hybrid to tackle the 178 yard Par 3. Slightly past the hole we had a nine footer with a big right to left break. Taking a bit more break, we tracked nicely right in the cup. Note to R: take more break as you always under-read the break!
We seem to be good on Par 3s nowadays. On the next one, Ruby 8, a 9-iron got me pin high left of the flag. Also a nine footer, this time we had a left to right break that played more than it seemed. Bang, right in the center of the hole. Everyone was ecstatic as we had this new rule that anyone with more than two Birdies in one round would have to buy lunch!
Not bad to get back to two over for the back nine…don’t ask about the front…
