It was a nice sunny day at Clearwater Bay Golf Club, Hong Kong for the BMW Golf Cup International. Can’t believe we’ve been driving a Bimmer for so many years and this is the first time we were invited. Anyway, better late than never. The winds were quite strong today and with any coastline course, this can spell trouble. We were off to a great start, but it wasn’t until our 16th hole (#1 on the Ocean Course, a Par 3) that magic happened. The yardage said 176 yards to the pin. Downhill and strong left to right wind, we thought of hitting a 4 hybrid. But our fellow competitor, who teed off before us came up well short – almost 20 yards in front of the green. So we switched to a 3 hybrid and hoped that we won’t go over. Aiming at the left bunkers, the wind carried me on to the green, albeit right of the flag. But on the green nonetheless. An 18 footer with a slight right to left break miraculously found its way into the cup.
The competition was divided into three divisions, two for men and one for women. We were in Division II for handicaps 11.1 to 25.2. The winners in each division get a chance to play in the world finals in Phuket, Thailand in February next year. The handicaps were calculated using New New Peoria, so there was a strong element of luck. Although we knew we played well (gross score of 84) we had no idea how our nett score will turn out. So we were really surprised when they announced the winner…US! So we get to go to Phuket and C is already planning to tag along.
This will hopefully not be the last time we get to play in this annual event. The trophy is VERY nice too
