Dragon Birdie @ Eastlake GC, Sydney
On the first day of the Year of the Dragon (初一) we got our first Birdie on the 46th hole of the day. We played The Lakes, Sydney, in the morning but no Birdie luck there. So we played our back 18 at Eastlake Golf Club next door. Then on the 14th hole, a short 272 yard Par 4, our tee shot was pin high but pulled way left. I managed to miss the left bunker, but landed in the bottom of a steep slope, leaving a tough up and down. Taking our trusty 60° wedge, a high flop shot went straight towards the flag…and that was our second shot! Landing softly, I stopped three feet from the cup leaving an easy Birdie.
Kung Hei Fat Choy.
Birdie on 180 Yard Par 3 @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
The hole was cut on the left on the Par 3 Diamond 8 today. Playing 180 yards, we took the 24° hybrid and aimed right at the flag. We were dead on target and I just missed the flag by less than a foot, stopping six feet past the hole. A straight forward left to right putt nailed the Birdie.
1st Birdie to Welcome 2012 @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
We wished for an auspicious start to 2012 and hoped that a Birdie will appear during our round. We were not disappointed. On Jade 4, our fourth hole, our tee shot was not that exciting. In fact, we were lucky to carry the water! Left with 165 yards on this short Par 4, with wind against us, we took a swing with a 5-iron. Following a low trajectory, I headed straight for the pin. Landing just six feet past the hole, we made a solid putt for 2012′s first Birdie.
2011 Year in Review
The ultimate highlight in 2011 was our Hole-in-One on September 11th. That alone is enough to remember 2011 by.
Nevertheless, there were other significant events worth mentioning. In February, we represented Hong Kong in the BMW Cup International World Final 2010 at the Lakes and Canyon Courses at The Blue Canyon Country Club in Phuket, Thailand.
We also had a guided tour of the highest hotel in the world – the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong. A nice welcome return to the luxury hotel scene in Hong Kong since its departure in 2008.
Our favorite new restaurant in 2011 would be Yardbird, where the chef, Matt Abergel, previously at Zuma Hong Kong takes chicken to a new level.
The sad passing of Steve Jobs shocked the world. May he rest in peace. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
In October, we were invited to the final leg of the Shui On Land’s China Golf Challenge at Caesar’s Golf, Macau. A very unique event with Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy and China’s Liang Wen-chong playing 18 holes in seven cities in China over seven days.
Here are some of our favorite photos in 2011…enjoy.
Last Birdies for 2011?
It was our weekly skins match at Discovery Bay, Hong Kong and it wasn’t until the 8th hole on Ruby that we had a realistic chance for Birdie. On the 151 yard Par 3, even with the wind helping, we took a 6-iron to go for the back pin. Barely making the right edge of the green, we were 15 feet from the hole. A slightly right to left breaker easily found the target.
Then on the 503 yard Par 5 Diamond #4, our 13th hole, we hit a monstrous shot leaving just 230 to the center of the green…even with a strong headwind. We tried to go for the green in two with our 5-wood, but pulled it left and I landed just past the cart path amongst the twigs and muck. Just chopping out trying to get somewhere on the green, I landed favorably and rolled past the hole leaving just a simple six foot uphill putt for Birdie.
There’s only one more round on the 30th, so these may well be the last Birdies for the year…we’ll see.
