OB Eagle @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
We hit our drive straight, but in the wrong direction on the Par 5 Ruby #3 (our 12th hole). Damn, out of bounds. Our provisional ball was hit solidly and a bit right. Having played from the forward blue tees, which were at the yellows today, our provisional shot cut the right dog leg and crossed the cart path leaving 180 yards to the center of the green. Failing to find the first ball, we had to play our provisional ball for our fourth shot. Using a 24° hybrid, we aimed to get somewhere near the green. We didn’t even pay attention to the pin position, which was in the back left. I darted straight as an arrow and landed just short of the green on the fringe. But the pin was in the back, 66 feet from where I landed! Our opponent was on in regulation and a par was inevitable. We weren’t thinking of halving the hole, and a bogey was already a good score with the OB. So we aimed about two feet right of the hole and gave it all we had. The putt looked like I was going to die, but I kept going and going. At the last 10 feet, the break kicked in and I turned left right into the hole! Wow, EAGLE! An OB Eagle though. An Eagle nonetheless. Our opponent got his par, but was speechless. Next time, we’ll have to try and keep the first ball in play and get a real Eagle.
Late Double Birdies @ Kau Sai Chau, Hong Kong
Playing on the South course at the Kau Sai Chau Easter Trophy, a better ball Stableford tournament, we started on the back nine and on the Par 4 #6 (our 15th hole) our drive started way left, but fortunately managed to fade back into the left edge of the fairway leaving 90 yards to the back pin. Hitting the trusty 52° wedge got me 18 feet below the hole. Putting slightly uphill with a right to left break, we got our first Birdie of the day.
Two holes later, on #8, a Par 4, our drive again started left and managed to just land left of the cart path. Took a free drop and got a bit closer to the fairway. Using a 56° wedge, we failed to hit down on our shot and topped it a bit. Fortunately I was still going in the right direction and landed seven feet from the pin. Hitting a firm putt for a downhiller took some of the right to left break out and dropped right into the center of the cup.
Double Birdie @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
A good drive left us 90 yards to the pin. A well struck 52° got me to nine feet for a downhill left to right putt. Our opponent chipped in for Birdie and thought he’d won the hole. But our confident stroke tracked right into the hole for a half!
Strong headwinds left our perfect drive with 180 yards to the back pin. We didn’t hit our 24° hybrid flush and ended up with a big low cut. But it miraculously landed perfectly on the back tier of the green within nine feet. A fairly straight putt, aimed at the inside left edge went straight in the center of the cup.
Review – Guest Chef Paul Liebrandt @ Mandarin Grill + Bar, Hong Kong
(Update 13 April 2012 – updated Wagyu | Tuna PL descriptions with feedback from Corton)
We were excited to get a table for Paul Liebrandt’s wine pairing dinner at the Mandarin Grill + Bar. It was fully booked and we were lucky that there was a last minute cancellation. The chef-owner from the two Michelin starred Corton in New York attracted our interest, but our expectations were a bit cautious as we thought it was going to be a lot of molecular gastronomy. Nevertheless, we went with open minds and open mouths.
Match Play Birdie @ HK Golf Club, Hong Kong
R was a bit under the weather and we were playing a better ball match play tournament against the Duffers on the New Course at the Hong Kong Golf Club. The virus didn’t really kick in until the back nine, so we got off to a good start with a Birdie on the Par 3 2nd. Playing 138 yards, we took a bit more club to make sure we got on the green and chose the 7-iron. A well struck tee shot got me to within eight feet for a slight downhill left to right putt. That was kind of the highlight of the day. It was sort of downhill from then and we ended up losing 3&2.
