Successful Move to New Server
Posted by birdie in Miscellaneous on December 6, 2009
Thanks for being so patient. The weekend move to our new server at ICDSoft was very successful. Pinging the server showed a remarkable 18 fold improvement in response times! Thanks to Vinko for helping me with the move. The new servers are at iAdvantage in Hong Kong, closer to home. I would be curious to see how the response time is affected for our overseas friends. Drop me a comment below to let me know.
Windy Birdie @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong – Jade 4 (Par 4)
Facing strong headwinds on Jade 4 (Par 4) at Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, we took out driver to make sure we carried the huge lake. A solid hit drifted a bit to the right, which meant that the second shot was semi-blind. Left with 130 yards, we took an 8-iron to compensate for the wind. On the green, but left with a 24 foot putt to the hole cut at the back today. Aiming one ball left of the cup, I rolled bang right in the center of the cup.
Birdie Moving This Weekend
Posted by birdie in Miscellaneous on December 3, 2009
I’m moving (servers) this weekend and so there maybe some interruptions in service. We will try to keep it to a minimum and hopefully performance will improve after the move. Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused. See you next week.
Birdie Recovery @ Discovery Bay, Hong Kong
After a disastrous, and I mean disastrous, hole on Diamond 7 (Par 4) at Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, we thought things were falling apart. Then we were faced with a 170 yard Par 3 on Diamond 8 with the pin at the back. With a massive water hazard in front of the green, we took a 4-hybrid to make sure that we kept dry. Last thing we wanted was to compound to the problems of the previous hole.
After a nice fade, I landed nine feet from the hole. A confidently struck left to right downhill putt sealed the birdie and stopped the bleeding.
It was pars and bogeys all the way to the finish for a round of 83. Not bad for sleeping just five hours last night.
Review – Café Gray Deluxe, Hong Kong
Couldn’t make a dinner reservation at this new restaurant on the 46th floor of the spanking new Upper House hotel in Pacific Place, Hong Kong. The chef, Gray Kunz of the New York establishment of the same name returns to this city, having worked at the Hong Kong Regent’s Plume in the past. Dying to check this place out, we decided to go for afternoon tea on a Saturday afternoon.
Judging from the evening bookings, we made a reservation but were surprised to find it pretty empty at this hour. Entering the hotel on the ground level (next to Marriott Hotel), a long escalator took us up to to the lifts. The hotel actually starts on the 38th floor. Designed by renowned Hong Kong architect Andre Fu, the interior has a strong Armani style. Arriving on the 49th floor, we enter a long walkway to reach the reception area. Being high up, we expected good views of the harbor. But the real view is from the restrooms. You get a great view of the Pacific Place 3 office tower (from the men’s). Wonder if people can see us from the other side…
The tea set came with your typical selection of sandwiches – egg, cucumber, roast beef and smoked salmon. Sweets included scones, apple pastry, lemon tart, chocolate cake and even a homemade chocolate bar. The scones were a bit hard and more like biscuits than your traditional scones. The variety is good as we hate it when there are too many kinds and end up not touching half of them. Quality is always more important than quantity. Besides Sevva, this is also a good choice for afternoon tea.
Now all we have to do is make that dinner reservation.
